Augmented Reality brings live 3D animations to Dibidogs book
Dibidogs (Dibitassut) is a new animated television series for children, with a storyline inspired by the creativity of children. In Finland, where the show is currently broadcasting, characters from the series now continue their adventures in a vividly-illustrated book published by Kustannusosakeyhtiö Paasilinna. As an exciting new addition, the book contains interactive three-dimensional animations known as Augmented Reality (AR). In several pages of the book special images, called markers, are embedded in the illustrations. Using PC software distributed with the book and a web camera, readers can view live 3D animations that seem to pop out of the book. The places and characters of the book come to life and the reader can explore the virtual world and interact with the characters by moving the camera.
The AR technology used in the book was developed by the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, Northern Europe's largest research institute. The book's level of interactivity and photorealism is unparalleled world-wide.
The first edition is in Finnish. An English edition will be published in 2011.
