British software company Autonomy has created an iPhone 4 app called Aurasma that can recognize a photo in an online newspaper and insert a matching video. It uses a stripped down version of Autonomy’s IDOL pattern recognizer,
Aurasma does image recognition locally in contrast to most other vision and speech recognition systems, which pass information to centralized computers in the cloud.
Autonomy plans to make Aurasma available as a free app on smartphones in May. The first version will be created by a movie studio working on an augmented reality game that accompanies the release of a new movie.
