John Craig Freeman has twenty years of experience using emergent technologies to produce large-scale public works at sites where the forces of globalization are impacting the lives of individuals in local communities.
He is currently an Associate Professor of New Media, at Emerson College (Boston) in the Department of Visual and Media Arts and a Visiting Scholar at the Center for Research in Computing and the Arts, at UC San Diego.

The NewMe Accelerator, a startup incubator program focused on underrepresented minorities in the tech industry, assembles a select group of tech entrepreneurs from all over the United States every year to participate in its 12-week Silicon Valley accelerator. NewMe is a residential program, meaning that the entrepreneurs all live together in a house for three months to brainstorm and hack on their respective projects — “eating, sleeping and drinking our startups,” as NewMe puts it. Along the way, mentors such as Mitch Kapor, Vivek Wadwha, Ben Horowitz andothers stop by the NewMe house to provide advice, insight and inspiration.

If you’ve ever envied Mario’s ability to pluck coins from thin air, Borglar has an augmented reality app for you.
At first look, Borglar is a game that superimposes boxes, medallions and other virtual items over the real world as seen through a mobile device. Rather than just scatter them around, Borglar uses the device’s geolocation capabilities to place these objects on specific GPS coordinates that are relevant to where the gamer physically is.
That’s when the app transcends the land of Mario, however. Borglar works with retailers and other businesses to make those virtual items worth something: an in-game powerup, a discount on a purchase, a downloaded song, or any of the other ideas the Borglar team came up with while talking with South by Southwest attendees.
In other words, Borglar puts a rather literal angle on brand visibility, while combining a touch of geocaching and gaming to the concept of social check-ins.

Last week, Kevin gave us the lowdown on the exciting new getUserMedia device API coming to browsers in the near future, partly thanks to the WebRTC specification (the set of JavaScript APIs for Real Time Communication). I can guarantee you we’ll be seeing more webcam and microphone-related experiments over the coming months!
Apart from the classic “Photo Booth” style apps we’re going to see lots of motion tracking and augmented reality experiments — and natively in the browser. Combine that with 3D graphics via WebGL and wow, imagine the possibilities…
So here are a couple of cutting-edge experiments that show off what will soon be possible. The first comes from the always awesome HTML5 Rocks website, run by Google. Check out this demo of motion tracking which uses a pre-recorded video instead of a webcam as the source. Or try out the real thing if you have Google Chrome Canary installed and have printed out the AR marker:
Virtuteq’s ‘augmented reality’ technology allows smartphone users to see information about their location through photos, videos, audio and 3D models, and even obtain directions.
It has been made possible with the support of Newcastle Science City, and is the work of Paul Smith.
At the University of Sunderland and Leeds Trinity, students are now using Virtuteq’s technology to find facilities on campus, and the company is currently working with local museums to provide an interactive guide that allows visitors to have exhibition information at their fingertips.
The technology can also be used to deliver discount vouchers for food, location maps with a ‘take me there’ functionality, and even treasure hunts for children.
Paul is looking to secure investment to take the company international, and to market the product to a wide range of potential users including local authorities and tourist attractions.
He said: “As far as I am aware there aren’t any other companies in the North East or even the UK doing exactly what we are doing.

(via & more http://7scenes.com/2012/03/creative-concepting-in-milan/)On March 14, we were present at the School of Design of the Italian university 'Politechnico di Milano'. Here we hosted a workshop as part of the course Augmented Reality & Mobile Experience. Eighty-six students will learn all about this subject in the following semester. They participated in our creative hands-on session as an introduction to this course.
During the four-hour workshop, our CEO Ronald Lenz introduced them to the subject of location-based storytelling and augmented reality. The student teams also brainstormed to come up with a creative concept for which they could use the 7scenes platform. Afterwards they learned how to create Scenes on our platform.
Some videos of the student presentations are available on the AR & ME blog.

In 2011, author, Martijn Arets, visited 20 inspiring companies around Europe to learn how to build a better brand. The stories and lessons he learned became the book Brand Expedition.
What Martijn set out to do was to visit these companies and understand them better. This became reality when he quit his job and went on the road to interview CEO’s, founders and brand managers. He captured his findings on video and shared his experiences by blogging and tweeting while on the road. At each stop, he requested that each CEO ask the next CEO a question on video. To engage more with his growing audience, Martijn asked them to help pick out which company to visit next.

(via & more http://iblog-tecknova.blogspot.jp/2012/03/microsoft-patents-virtual-reality.html)Microsoft appears to be taking augmented reality pretty seriously. The software giant has a pair of new patents that were discovered by Patent Boltthis week, detailing projector eyewear technology for use with a game console like the Xbox 360 and with future mobile devices.
The first patent describes a full-on helmet with attached, visor-like eyepieces and appears to be intended for Xbox gamers, according to the blog. The second reveals eyewear that resembles a pair of sunglasses—that's the tech Microsoft would attempt to integrate into future smartphones, media players, and other mobile devices, so it makes sense that it comes in a form that people might actually want to wear out in public. The trouble with compact display systems built into goggles or eyeglasses like the ones Microsoft appears to be building, Patent Bolt notes, is that "the human eye can't focus on images less than a few centimeters away." This means the interface has to present a "virtual image" that appears to the eye as if it's actually further away than on the screen-slash-eyepiece where it really lives.
Microsoft's solution is to use a virtual-image projector that "comprises a laser configured to form a narrow beam, first and second dilation optics [each with a diffraction grating], first and second redirection optics, and a controller," according to Patent Bolt.
