The HIT Lab NZ staff and students demonstrated the CityViewAR app to the public during the weekend of 10-11 December, 2011, at the Cashel Mall in downtown Christchurch. CityViewAR is an augmented reality application for smartphones that shows the city of Christchurch as it was before the earthquakes. It visualizes three-dimensional models of the buildings that have been taken down, and also provides historical information and pictures. Hundreds of people visiting the Cashel Mall during the weekend were able to see the demonstration of the app, and were able to download and use it on their own devices.
