Martian Attack - Zapparel from Zappar on Vimeo.
(via Viemo)Augmented-reality app specialist Zappar and private-label clothier Hybrid Apparel today announced a line of 20 T-shirts with Threadless-esque designs that come to life through AR. In the video below, we see an example of augmented-reality fashion via a T-shirt named "Mars Attacks." Using the free Zappar app (available for iOS and Android devices), a person using the iPad's touch screen and rear camera defeats a large robot projected on the T-shirt by zapping it with lasers. Not bad.
Check out video of other AR T-shirts at Zappar's Vimeo page. While some designs seem amusing, quite a few leave me wondering what the point of AR clothing is. The only way someone will see AR on these shirts is if the person has the Zappar app running on a smartphone or tablet.

SHAPE Services continues to add new features and fine tune their instant messaging products and platform. Both IM+ and IM+Pro support two more instant messaging services, gain the geeky feel of augmented reality searching, and improve upon existing features.
The United States has Google, Yahoo!, Microsoft, AOL, Facebook, and a number of other companies that offer well-known instant messaging services. However, that’s not to say other regions of the world don’t have social-networking systems with tons of users. SHAPE recognizes this fact and has added support for two popular Russian instant messaging services,VKontakte and Yandex IM, to the IM+ apps. And speaking of international user acknowledgement, Portuguese and Dutch join the list of natively supported languages.
Augmented reality on the iPhone was once just a concept tinkered with by developers, and not even allowed by Apple’s SDK policies initially, but is now becoming a pretty common feature for travel, lifestyle, and social-networking apps as a secondary search option. Where has SHAPE implemented AR? They’ve added it as a traditional map replacement to be used on iDevices equipped with cameras for the Neighbors service.
(via YouTube)Leaf++ is an augmented reality and computer vision system which uses smartphones to recognize leaves found in the natural environment. In this first promo video you will see some basic features of the system, embedded into a social network in which users share information on leaves: you can recognize a leaf using computer vision and write onto it.
People using Leaf++ on a certain type of leaf will see the content written on it by previous users, thus enacting an ubiquitous social and knowledge network which is directly available in the natural environment.Watch out for the next videos in which we will show an art performance in which leaves are used in an augmented reality concert using the shapes found in the natural environment to create live generative music and visuals.
Leaf++ will be officially presented at ISEA 2011 in Istanbul, and then at Mindtrek 2011, at DEOL 2011, and it has already been published on Parsons Journal for Information Mapping and on MediaDuemila. Watch out for more presentations, publications and performances.
