    Event Description:

Near Field Communications (NFC), Geo-location services, and augmented reality (AR) are disrupting the consumer shopping experience while increasing sales and margins for brick and mortar retailers.

Putting interested buyers in front of relevant shelves at local stores is a huge monetizable opportunity for mobile platforms.  400,000 new Android devices are enabled each day, 60-70M phones are shipping with NFC this year alone and 15% of Tier 1 retailers are integrating mobile e-commerce platforms. Come discover how start ups in mobile are making shopping a whole lot smarter.

The panel will discuss a whole host of challenges and opportunities in the mobile retail space including:

    • How does a 20% conversion-rate for brick and mortar retail stores, (compared to 3-5% max online)create an opportunity for new companies?
    • Will consumers welcome or fear new shopping features?
    • Does the type of product or the market impact the preferred buying experience?
    • In the world of augmented shopping via mobile devices, will we see a shift away from online commerce?
    • Is mainstream NFC penetration at critical mass yet? What other technologies will emerge to supplement the platform and empower elements of the ecosystem?  What will be the impact on commerce?
According to Morgan Stanley, the growth curve for the mobile Internet is twelve times as steep as that of desktop Internet when it was introduced. Sixty to 70 million mobile phones are shipping with near field communication (NFC) enabled this year. Retailers are getting on board with recent mobile e-commerce technologies, as the conversion rate for brick-and-mortar sales is 20 percent, compared to only three to five percent online: indications we are seeing the beginning of a new environment for offline shopping via mobile-enabled virtual-to-physical commerce.

Microsoft on Thursday released a software development kit for its Kinect gaming system, and hackers are already testing the limits of what the device can do.

For major platforms, launching a software development kit is a big deal. When launching a new piece of hardware like the Kinect, building a robust ecosystem of applications is important to attract potential buyers. In order for that to happen, hardware companies need to court the developer community, enticing coders to build different programs for the new device. Recently, Apple has seen the most success in this realm, as its iOS platform contains over 500,000 applications available for download in its App Store. Similarly, Android is catching up with over 200,000 in the Android Market.

What’s difficult to imagine, however, is how Microsoft can build its developer base of Kinect coders when there seems to be little financial incentive for them to join. As the online zine Make points out, Microsoft’s developer agreement terms essentially state “you can’t start a business, make money, sell services or consulting” using the SDK.

“Under the terms of the license for this SDK Beta, you cannot deploy applications created with the SDK Beta for use in your business operations,” according to the Non-Commercial Use terms Microsoft makes developers agree to. “Even if no fee is charged or received in connection with such use, such use in a business is still a commercial use and is not permitted under the SDK Beta license.”

This is arguably one of the biggest stumbling blocks for Android, which is being beaten out by iOS in terms of making developers more money.
Still, the impetus for Microsoft’s SDK release began with amateur coders creating homebrewed hacks with the Kinect for the fun of it. If opening up the SDK leads to more of this, Kinect’s platform could grow much larger.

Of course, Microsoft’s SDK release is initially available to Windows 7 developers only.

A Framework for Rapid Prototyping of Augmented Reality Interfaces: Using JavaScript to Model Augmented Reality Overview

Augmented reality is a technique to display information superimposed on a users per- ception of reality. When developing computer systems employing augmented reality, a key consideration beyond technical parameters is the paradigm provided for the usage of the system. This thesis presents a framework to rapidly develop augmented reality applications through scripting within a specialized JavaScript runtime environment, to elaborate on and evaluate different interaction techniques and use cases. The framework provides an application developer with a platform to model virtual worlds with a condensed set of concepts from a full- featured scene graph implementa- tion, and the functionality to spatially align objects in the virtual worlds with markers recognized by a camera. Custom components can be registered to modify the virtual worlds in response to events issued in the system. The framework is subsequently used to model the application NautiNav, a mock-up of a nautical navigation software, to validate the approach and illustrate the usage of the framework.

This is just an demonstration and early release of app !! App language is Turkish! As we see, nowadays, the presentation form of information is important as the content; it is planned that destination location or bus stop would be presented inside the borders of augmented reality concept. It is obtained that a 3-D arrow leads to destination location by calculating instant values of orientation sensors of phone. It is maintained that the application will be up to date as the bus route and bus stop information will be carried over a web service.

Location finding property uses functions that supplied by Android via GPS, via A-GPS or via base-station triangulation. “Google Maps” used as the main map service; in the geocoding and reverse geocoding part, high modularity is kept prior mission that let the other services except “Google Maps” would be implemented easily. Php an MySql are used to create web service that evaluates current and destination location parameters, and replies a route list response to mobile application.

Getting away from its normal application in the mobile device world, augmented realitygets a different sort of treatment in a new exhibition called the "Augmented Window: A Sensory Observatory."Created by French designer Thierry Fournier, the screen operates much like a window, displaying live video of the surrounding environment that visitors can touch and accessgeo-tagged informational hotspots. Most non-techies are still a bit behind the curve in terms of knowing what augmented reality is, so this exhibit is a great step toward introducing the new paradigm to the mainstream. You can check it at the Centre Pompidou in France until June 26 — more informationhere.

Japanese game manufacturer Takara Tomy showcased a particularly realistic virtual handheld fishing game calledVirtual Masters Reel AR Fishing at this years Toy Show in Tokyo. Set to be released in July of this year, the fishing rod shaped gadget allows players to engage in a full fishing experience regardless of their location, thanks to a built in 2.4 inch liquid crystal monitor and a rod console that mimics the actual sensation of real fishing gear. UsingAugmented Reality (AR), it contains a 0.3 megapixel camera that allows players to take photos of wherever they are and use them as the “environment” to go fishing in.

The AR segment in Takara Tomy’s new toy is an interesting added feature. Its built in camera can take photos to be stored on a miniSD card, which can then be transferred onto a computer. Unfortunately the reverse is not possible, but an updated version where any picture can be transferred to be used as a fishing arena would be a nice touch. This would allow fishermen to do the impossible, such as catching prey in the grand canyon by simply downloading a picture of it from Google Images. The sound effects also enhance the realism with specific sounds such as the bait hitting the water, the water ripples, and the flight of the float as users cast out.

It seems to judge what information you display by the QR code, to relate the data acquired afterwards with the AR marker part (perhaps black part of the outside frame), and to arrange it.
