Asda has teamed up with augmented reality (AR) provider Zappar to create the UK’s first-ever augmented reality enabled Easter Egg Hunt. Asda shoppers can set off on an in-store Easter Egg Hunt, guided by an augmented reality Easter Bunny powered by Zappar. The fun will be taking place from 10am – 6pm on Saturday 23rd March.
Specially designed Easter Egg point of sale will be hidden around almost 400 Asda stores across the UK for children and adults to discover. When zapped using the Asda app, each egg will transform into virtual 3D Easter Eggs revealing an Easter Bunny hidden inside that will display a secret letter. The letters will form a password that once completed, will entitle the successful treasure hunters to a free gift!
Shoppers will only need to download the free Asda app onto a smartphone or tablet and then get zapping in Asda stores across the country. The fun starts when the Easter Bunny will leap out of his hole from a floor mat and tell kids and their parents all about this magical hunt. It will also be possible to pose with the AR Easter Bunny to take photos and video to share with friends!

(via http://www.wired.com/beyond_the_beyond/2013/03/layar-and-qr-codes/ )“We’ve just released an update to Layar that includes some new functionality that may surprise you. With the new Layar App v7.2 for iOS and Android, you can now also scan and view content from QR codes – but not in the way you might think. It’s way better than that.
“When we launched the Layar Creator and interactive print, some said we were sticking the knife in QR codes, or even providing the final nail in the QR code’s coffin.
“We’re not killing the QR code. We’re making the QR code better than ever by pairing it with interactive print and bringing the two technologies together in a single app, providing a better user experience. No more switching from one app to another; now the Layar App does it all.
(via YouTube by spectrummag)With a little duct tape, a touch screen tablet, and their new API, the Microsoft Research Cambridge team built an app for brain surgeons. Kinect Fusion supplies 3D modeling of anything, which could fuel some seriously neat medical innovations. At the 13th annual Microsoft TechFest, Ben Glocker demoed a prototype app that would allow neurosurgeons to look inside a patient's brain before they cut it open. Doctors could see the skeleton, brain, blood vessels, and the targeted tumor on a tablet--which can move around the patient's head--helping them to plot the best brain surgery path.

In traditional bird's eye view maps the spatial relations between spots and locations are perceived in a unique and very natural way, making it easy and intuitive to orient oneself. In many tourist maps, this perspective survives assisted by other useful graphical elements. Augmented reality allows the development of interactive tourist maps where the user can observe a detailed 3d reconstruction of the city from an ideal bird's view perspective, finding monuments and points of interest in a easy and intuitive way. The traditional tourist city map could be distributed together with a specific AR app that uses the paper map as AR marker, adding a new layer of extra tourist infos (updated regularly), a 3d model of the city and its monuments plus all the location based services available with the GPS support.
(via YouTube by InsightMediaTV1)Sharp Electronics showed their full lines of 60-90" digital signage displays, which we have covered before. New at the event was a virtual clothes modeling application that is essentially an augmented reality application that allows consumers to try on clothing in front of a large mirror/display. Using a camera-based system and chromakey technology. the consumer can interactively change the color of the garment they are trying on in front of the mirror/display. In this way, the merchandizer only needs to stock a range of sizes for the garment - not a range of colors. Once the consumer likes the color they like, it can be ordered on line. The solution is already in use in a store (Uniqlo) in New York.
