(via YouTube by pddnet)Today on Engineering Newswire, brought to you by PD&D TV, we're building a bionic arm, creating a bladeless ceiling fan, and adding hands-free augmented reality to glasses. This episode features:
•Researchers at the Fraunhofer Center for Organics, Materials and Electronic Devices have spent years designing interactive head mounted displays based on OLED technology that can access augmented reality and enhance the real world with additional visual information.
•The Perceptual Robotics Laboratory in Italy has developed a wearable, mechanical exoskeleton called the Body Extender.
•Nigel Ackland's bionic arm, the bebionic v2 hand from RSLSteeper, has a manually adjustable thumb with two locking positions with an integrated sensor for position detection.
•The PatrolBot, built by software engineer Steve Norris ... in his spare.
•Exhale Fans, a Georgetown, Indiana-based ceiling manufacturer, that is determined to disrupt the fan industry with its innovative, bladeless ceiling fan design.

In this paper, we discuss how the sensors available in modern smartphones can improve 6-degree-of-freedom (6DOF) localization in wide-area environments. In our research, we focus on phones as a platform for largescale Augmented Reality (AR) applications. Thus, our aim is to estimate the position and orientation of the device accurately and fast -- it is unrealistic to assume that users are willing to wait tenths of seconds before they can interact with the application. We propose supplementing vision methods with sensor readings from the compass and accelerometer available in most modern smartphones. We evaluate this approach on a largescale reconstruction of the city center of Graz, Austria. Our results show that our approach improves both accuracy and localization time, in comparison to an existing localization approach based solely on vision. We finally conclude our paper with a real-world validation of the approach on an iPhone 4S.

(vai & more YouTube by ARworksReality)ARworks prepared this AR application with 10 different 10-30 sec 3D animations with the Grey advertising agency for their client, Allianz. The task was simple and not unique for the insurance sector: how to present potential home accidents to the target group in a non-frightening way.
Grey built a pop up building in the centre of Budapest, where visitors, with the help of AR, could experience, what kind of small accidents could happen in their home. On arrival, everybody received an iPad - after that they just had to walk around and check different parts of the flat with the tablet. At those points they were shown funny, interesting scenes - potential accidents -, which were happening to the actual objects in the house - but of course, only in augmented reality

Augmented reality, or AR is where real, physical world and virtual world meet. Using a built-in camera of mobile devices like smartphones and tablet PCs, the AR technology allows smartphone users to scan real objects in the physical world to search information about them on the Internet and then see unlimited shapes and sizes of symbols, icons, pictures, texts, even moving video images of virtual world. The working theory is straightforward.
Matt Mills, an inventor of global phenomenon Aurasma AR app, strode on the stage of Tech Plus Forum held in Seoul from Nov. 7 to 8 to demonstrate how his AR app Aurasma works in sync with his iPhone's built-in camera to breathe virtual life into dead objects like portraits or pictures in the physical world. He is head of global marketing of Aurasma, too.
