(via YouTube by suranga81 )EyeRing is a wearable intuitive interface that allows a person to point at an object to see or hear more information about it. We came up with the idea of a micro camera worn as a ring on the index finger with a button on the side, which can be pushed with the thumb to take a picture or a video that is then sent wirelessly to a mobile phone to be analyzed. The user receives information about the object in either auditory or visual form. Future versions of our proposed system may include more sensors to allow non-visual data capture and analysis. This finger-worn configuration of sensors opens up a myriad of possible applications for the visually impaired as well as the sighted.

Here’s an interesting approach to Augmented Reality marketing: turn hats into Zombie heads.
The Zaphat (pronounced like Zap Hat, not Zafat) is a new line of fashion apparel where the logo on the accoutrement acts as the target for an iOS/Android app that uses Augmented Reality to transform the wearer into an avatar of their choice.
In other words, when you wear a special hat, people can look at you with an app and see a Zombie instead of your head and then take a picture of you.
This takes personal branding to a new level and is meant to be a fun experience and a way to create images for your social network.
As long as the hat is comfortable, stylish and competitively priced I find it hard to see what’s not to like here. Being able to make you look like a Zombie is icing on the cake.
The Zaphat (and accompanying app) all developed by Zappar, could easily be popular in youth markets, and is obviously expandable to different pieces of clothing, allowing for an entire doppelganger wardrobe to be associated with any clothing line. That’s an interesting idea.

There’s something startling and incredible about aiming your smartphone at a painting and watching the man in it come to life. Everything else in the frame looks the way it always does — your desk cluttered with Post-It notes and pens, your glass of water sweating in the August heat — but the painted man has passed through some invisible filter and is now moving and talking and even pouring himself a drink. Is this really your office, or have you somehow been transported into Harry Potter’s Gryffindor House?
As global head of innovation and partnerships atAurasma, Matt Mills oversees the company’s ongoing efforts to augment reality. Launched last summer, Aurasma and its users have created numerous video, music and 3-D animation “auras,” including a map of the Olympic Stadium in London that, when viewed through a smartphone, offered a 3-D exploration of the park.
Mills spoke with us about the remarkable ways he’s seen people use Aurasma, his company’s achievements in the last year and the future of augmented reality.
What is augmented reality?
Technically speaking, looking through one of those old kaleidoscopes is augmenting reality. Anytime you are changing the way that the world looks or enhancing the world through some thing, you are augmenting it. It’s a relatively broad description. Of course, the way that people think of it in our modern world, it’s using some sort of technology device to gather information that exists somewhere and bring it into the real world in an extremely convenient way.

CBR spoke to Qualcomm about the company’s intensive R&D work on Augmented Reality, and what the future might hold for enterprise.
Jay Wright, senior director of business management at Qualcomm, oversees the company's Augmented Reality programme, which is positioning itself as a new high-tech way for marketers and advertisers to reach consumers.
See CBR's feature story here for a quick backgrounder about Augmented Reality (AR), for those that aren't familiar with the concepts involved.
Jay Wright, senior director of business management, Qualcomm
Why has a mobile phone chip designer decided to become so interested in Augmented Reality, which is really a software application?
"Qualcomm started in AR about 3 years ago. Most of the things we look at in R&D are intended to drive additional computing requirements - we want to find applications that require more and more computing power, to put behind our primary business, which is chipsets."
"[AR] looked like something that would drive future computing power, because it's extremely computationally intensive."
Much of Qualcomm's focus has been less on GPS and compass based AR, but use of mobile devices' onboard cameras. It effectively operates as a 'computer eye' spotting objects, which it then overlays images in real time.
"You're effectively processing video streams in real time and looking for these objects frame by frame, while comparing them to the database of objects - which is hugely intensive."

E-commerce has emerged as one of the most prominent aspects of the retail industry. Retailers have been making more of an effort to connect with online consumers in recent years, recognizing that these people represent a wide and diverse audience. As retailers begin to focus more on e-commerce, they are becoming more interested in the use of augmented reality. Many retailers face a simple, but important problem in that a significant portion of online consumers will not make purchases of items they cannot try on first. Augmented reality may be capable of solving this problem.
