DOOR BEN DAVIS, DECEMBER 4TH, 2013Since 2009, the British Museum has educated youngsters in Bloomsbury via its Samsung Digital Discovery Centre (SDDC). It’s free, and is the most extensive on-site digital learning programme of any UK museum.
I went along to the British Museum last week to see the launch of a new image recognition and augmented reality (AR) app, A Gift for Athena, helping kids to engage with the museum’s Parthenon gallery.
The app is simple in premise and use, but also a lot of fun, showing that augmented reality can succeed when applied in the right manner.
In this post I’ll discuss why the app works, and what’s needed to succeed with AR.
With Samsung set to support the museum’s Discovery Centre for another five years, and this new app being the first of a series, we can expect more best practice to come.
The British Museum has previous with AR, the mobile programme Passport to the Afterlife, which runs on Samsung Galaxy Nexus phones in the ancient Egypt galleries, being a notable success.
The museum plans to use new technology to provide innovative in-depth activities including touch tables, 3D printing, 3D animation, as well as increasing use of augmented reality.

building on design technologies in the medicinal field, the latest undertaking by yves behar and fuseproject called ‘kernel of life’ is a cloud-based test and treatment system for illness in the developing world. administering both analysis and diagnosis for chronic disease, particularly malaria, the wearable device is embedded with a four quadrant bio-sensing absorbent pad that can test the blood, saliva, urine and breath. the results are transmitted via bluetooth to a mobile application, which allows for the continuous monitoring of patients remotely. reminders, such as medicine intake or doctor’s visits, facilitate easy and uncomplicated consultation when the nearest physician is days away. the diagnostic health care device was proposed by the gates foundation and wired magazine, and is a design response to the complications of attending to sickness in countries with little access to proper medical care.iv(via http://www.designboom.com/technology/fuseproject-diagnoses-illness-treatment-with-kernel-of-life-11-28-2013/)

(via YouTuvbe bylemonorangePL)For the 9th birthday of the Arkadia Shopping Mall, Lemon&Orange prepared interactive entertainment controlled by motion sensors. Young (and slightly older) users of the system could interact with virtual animals via Augmented Reality technology.Animations of interactive animals were accompanied by mini-games, where the user had to complete a specific task -- for instance, the kids had to wave their arms to sway a virtual monkey on a liane and collect bananas from trees. During the 2-day event, Lemon&Orange virtual zoo was visited by several hundred kids.
Simple sequences of movements, such as jumping up and down, clapping one's hands or raising one's arms, allowed the kids to play with digitally generated animals, which responded in real time to gestures made in front of the screen.

The company introduced Evena Medical augmented reality glasses for hospital staff. Points are called Eyes-On, and are based on proprietary technology 3D visualization crossed with glasses Epson Moverio. The main function of Eyes-On is to help doctors find a vein patients for accurate shots.
Frank Ball, president and chief executive officer of Evena Medical, said: "Studies have shown that 40% of intravenous injections require a few attempts to find and get into the vein. This is not only valuable time, but also causes discomfort to the patient as well as may delay the introduction of emergency medicine. With glasses Eyes-On nurses can quickly and easily find and access the veins of each patient. "

A season that brings families and friends together for great photo shoots. This year, instead of taking the usual ‘stand by the Christmas Tree’ type of photos, get snapshots of a different kind this Christmas at Marina Square’s Largest Augmented Reality Winter Wonderland to be built in a shopping mall, located at Level 2, Main Atrium, from 22 November to 25 December 2013. Ok, probably some of you are having the same question as me before I attended this media invitation today, “What is Augmented Reality (AR)?” Instead of giving you the explanation in words, let me show you in the video below:~ - See more at:

Shopkick deployed the first iBeacon/BLE-based presence signal at any major retailer on November 20, 2013. It is called shopBeacon and is currently live in a closed beta trial at Macy's Herald Square, New York and Union Square, San Francisco. ShopBeacon can welcome a shopper when she enters a store and show her location-specific deals, discounts, recommendations, and rewards, without her having to remember to open the app. It can also tie at-home browsing to in-store benefit—if she "likes" a specific product in the app, shopBeacon can remind her when she enters the store that sells it. It can also deliver department-specific offers throughout the store—so the boots she liked show up at the most useful time—in the Shoe department. ShopBeacon requires minimal investment, can be installed by sticking the device on a wall or other flat surface, and has a battery life of five years. Now available for purchase nationwide, it works with the shopkick app with its 6 million+ shoppers, as well as with retailers' own apps.(via YouTube by shopkick)
Re+Public created a digital, interactive, augmented reality urban mural on the Moto Museum wall in St. Louis. The project included an 85' x 21' mural by MOMO comprised of 14 basic shapes. Using the the free Re+Public app (App Store & Google Play), users can view, walk around, in, and through the 42 digital variations of the basic shapes. Some digital shapes can only be viewed and touched by moving around the physical space. By simply touching the shapes on the mobile device, users can randomly recompose the mural. In this way, the app allows users to creatively work with fundamental elements of art such as space, composition, form, and color. The Moto Wall project was generously supported by Grand Center Inc., the Art and Life Alliance in cooperation with Steve Smith and the Moto Museum in St. Louis.
