Augmented reality (AR) is a live, direct or indirect, view of a physical, real-world environment whose elements are augmented by computer-generated sensory input such as sound, video, graphics or GPS data. It is related to a more general concept called mediated reality, in which a view of reality is modified (possibly even diminished rather than augmented) by a computer. As a result, the technology functions by enhancing one's current perception of reality. By contrast, virtual reality replaces the real world with a simulated one.

George Patterson Y&R Melbourne has created the first medically diagnosable advertising for the Australian Defence Force.
Here’s an award winning digital campaign from Down Under. This is a great example of digital being put to great use and truly engaging a niche target audience. It definitely ticks all the boxes in my opinion. It’s a recruitment campaign for the Australian Defence Force, called Mobile Medic. The task the agency (GPY&R) was given was to recruit as many Medical Students to get into a Defence University Sponsorship. Although I term it as a campaign, it is in actual fact a real test for medical wannabe’s – rather than straight digital advertising activity. It’s so good it’s just won 4 Gold Medals and oodles of silver and bronzes gongs to boot at Cannes.

Fashion always comes full circle with the subtle paprika of advanced fabric blend discoveries, but so does technology or at least our desire to wear it on our sleeve. New inventions are at first clunkier than strapping a walkman to your arm, and taper down to something you can adhere with a Band-Aid. The same goes for eyewear.
Spectacles revolutionized lives first, and fashion as a side effect. In a world without spectacles? the watchmaker retires as his eye sight falters and many older citizens, and those born with the need for vision correction, might be penniless or cast aside. Imagine if folks such as Dante were not actually blind by today’s standards, but needed extreme correction. What other great works would he have penned?

via & moreChariot Co. Ltd., an augmented reality (AR) development studio, debuted its new AR kiosk solution at the Tokyo International Toy Show on June 14. Unveiled at Happinet Corporation's booth to showcase the company's new "Domino World" toy series, the kiosk, which uses technology under license from Metaio GmbH, is among the first of its kind to be launched in Japan.
An existing issue for many packaged toys, according to Eiji Utsu of Happinet's Original Toy Development Division, is that, because customers cannot directly play with the product, it becomes less appealing. This, in turn, may make them less likely to follow through with a purchase. "Although products such as appliances, stationary and clothing can be physically touched by customers, with the exception of certain toys, this can be difficult." The AR kiosk thus provides an attractive solution. Once customers present a Domino World package to the kiosk's embedded camera, 3D animated contents are overlaid together with the package on the kiosk display, enabling customers to effectively preview the toy. "Understanding the contents of a product and being able to enjoy playing with it are key. We decided to adopt the AR kiosk because it fills these needs," Utsu said.

- AUGMENTED REALITY PLATFORM WINS AWARD FOR TECHNICAL INNOVATION -
LONDON, July 12, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Aurasma, the world's leading augmented reality platform, claimed the Award for Technical Innovation at the International Brand Video Awards (BRAVES) last night, fending off tough competition from both the UK and US.
The BRAVES are the first and only awards ceremony dedicated solely to recognising and rewarding the use of video by brands. The company, whose technology has been developed in Cambridge and is used by over 6,000 brands and agencies around the world, overcame competition from Ooyala and SocialVibe from the UK, and Unruly and Yantra Digital from the US to win the prize.
This accolade is the latest in a recent string of awards for Aurasma and its partners. In June, Aurasma won 'Best AR App' and overall 'AR Awards Champion' at the AR Awards 2012 - a new event specifically designed to recognise and reward key players in the rapidly emerging space of augmented reality.
Creative agency and long standing Aurasma collaborator, Billington Cartmell, recently won a Gold IPM award for 'On-pack Promotions' for its Aurasma-enabled Lucozade 'Yes' campaign. The agency also received a Silver award for 'Art Direction' and a Bronze award in the 'Innovation' category.
Elsewhere, Ogilvy Action was shortlisted at Cannes Lions for their work with Aurasma on the Wetherspoons Connected campaign, and won four other prestigious awards:
- The New Media Age Award for 'Best Use of Mobile'
- The Marketing Week Engage 2012 Award for 'Promotional Marketing'
- IPM Bronze Award in the 'Alcoholic Drinks' category
- MAA Award's 'Best Digitally Led Campaign'

Hands-free controllers like Kinect may not be ideal for all video games. If you were to fly a virtual kite, wouldn't you want to hold something tangible?
Now a new game called Rope Revolution, developed by graduate student Lining Yao and colleagues at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, uses an augmented-reality rope to allow players to fly a kite, ride a horse or skip with a partner across the globe.
The rope controller recognises various gestures, using a sensor in the wall attachment and an accelerometer built into the rope handle. For the kite flying game, the sensor is key to determining the position of the rope within the space, whereas the accelerometer is more important for jump rope to identify rotational motion. The system also generates rope resistance to make the virtual experience feel lifelike.
