Here at Engine Creative we have been immersing ourselves in all things celebrity gossip as we partner up with heat magazine’s editorial team to create the brand’s first Augmented Reality (AR) issue. The special issue has been created to support the launch of new showbiz and music channel ‘heat TV’ both of which are released on July 3rd 2012.
Not only have we created exclusive ‘augmented’ content for readers to access via their smartphone or tablet devices, but we’ve also developed a stand alone App, ‘heat extra’, that readers can download for free. The App acts as the gateway to all of the exclusive content as they flick through the magazine, providing a truly interactive and engaging reading experience.

IBM has released a prototype of an augmented reality mobile shopping app that retailers could adopt to offer consumers a more personalised in-store experience.
A consumer can use the app by pointing their mobile phone’s video camera over the retailers’ shelves. Products are recognised according to their shape, colours and other features.
The app will then tap into the retailer’s back-end computer system to overlay information on the screen and draw attention to offers and other similar products.
Sima Nadler, retail lead at IBM research, says: “In the age of social media, consumer expectations are soaring and people want information and advice about the products they’re going to buy.
“By closing the gap between the online and in-store shopping experience, marketers can appeal to the individual needs of consumers and keep them coming back.”
Smartphone users are already helping boost sales at bricks and mortar stores, according to Deloitte.
A survey conducted in March by the research firm states that about half (48%) of smartphone owners say their phones have influenced their decision to buy an item in store.
It adds that 61% of smartphone owners that have used their devices to shop have done so in-store and 52% have used their mobile to influence their purchase decision on the way to the store.
The influence of smartphones on consumers’ shopping habits translates to about $159bn (£101bn) in forecasted sales for 2012, Deloitte claims.

The tie-up with Sony Pictures is timed to coincide with next week’s launch of 'The Amazing Spider-Man in cinemas.
Attention will be drawn to the range with a competition featuring a New York ticket giveaway, run via Aurasma's augmented reality technology.
Posters featuring creative from ‘The Amazing Spider-man’ are being placed in windows of Uniqlo stores, and passers-by will be encouraged to use the Aurasma app to access exclusive 3D content and win a trip to New York.
The graphic and slogan motif 'Spider-Man' will be included on seven different designs of T-shirts, as part of a new Uniqlo collection.
The Japanese clothing retailer has a reputation of innovating in the digital space, with initiatives including the Pinterest 'Mosaic' campaign launched this week, and a Lucky Counter Twitter campaign it created while its ecommerce site was down.

EcoMOBILE (Ecosystems Mobile Outdoor Blended Immersive Learning Environment) is an extension of the EcoMUVE curriculum, developed at the Harvard Graduate School of Education with funding from the Institute of Education Sciences. In EcoMUVE, students explore a virtual representation of a pond ecosystem. In EcoMobile, funded by the National Science Foundation and Qualcomm's Wireless Reach initiative, students will use the EcoMUVE software and also extend their learning with mobile technologies through one or more field trips to a local pond environment. Two forms of technology for science education will enhance their experience in the real world.
First, students will be able to access and collect information and clues using a mobile broadband device (a smartphone with Qualcomm technology). Students can capture pictures, video, or voice recordings to serve as evidence in solving an environmental mystery. The MBDs will also allow students to access special features through an Augmented Reality (AR) interface (using Fresh AiR), which will provide students with information that would not otherwise be apparent in the natural environment.

EcoMUVE is a curriculum that was developed at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, with funding from the Institute of Education Sciences, U.S. Department of Education.
The goal of the EcoMUVE project is to help students develop a deeper understanding of ecosystems and causal patterns with a curriculum that uses Multi-User Virtual Environments (MUVEs). EcoMUVE includes two MUVE-based modules, Pond and Forest; each centers around an immersive, simulated ecosystem that represents a complex ecological scenario. Students work individually at their computers and collaborate in teams within the virtual world. The immersive interface allows students to learn science by exploring and solving problems in realistic environments.
The EcoMUVE Team at Harvard includes Chris Dede, Principal Investigator, Tina Grotzer, Co-Principal Investigator, Shari Metcalf, Project Director, and Amy Kamarainen, Post-Doctoral Fellow. This video was created by Ayelet Ronen.

(via http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/29/recon-goggles-gain-facebook-integration-and-augmented-reality-at/)Remember that Android SDK Recon Instruments finally unveiled for its heads-up display goggles? Well the company was showing off the fruits of its labor here at Google I/O 2012 with two demos -- specifically two-way Facebook integration and augmented reality using a Contour camera. In the first demo, the goggles are paired over Bluetooth with an app running on an Android phone. Each time you jump while snowboarding or skying, the accelerometer data from the goggles is sent to the handset which posts a graphic to Facebook showing the distance, height and duration of your flight.
